Funding Opportunities
Below you will find basic descriptions of grants and awards that are available along with the corresponding forms that you will need to apply. Please carefully review the Complete Grants and Awards Guide for full information on each opportunity. Applications that do not meet the format or requirement as explained in the application forms and the Complete Grants and Awards guide will not be sent for review by the Institute Review Committee in that competition. Applicants will have the opportunity to revise and resubmit for a future competition.
Operating Grants
Operating grants are available for one year projects that will provide critical seed funding needed for preliminary data to enhance opportunities to obtain national peer reviewed or industrial research support. These are expected to be new initiatives. They are not intended to provide continuous operating support. Renewals are not normally considered. Grants are awarded up to $40,000 in value.

Establishment Grants
These awards are offered to individuals newly recruited into the Manitoba Institute of Child Health to provide start-up funding for their research program. These awards have a value of up to $50,000. They can be renewed twice based on the submission of a satisfactory annual progress report each year of award to a potential maximum of $150,000 over three years.
Sports Legacy Fund Grants
This award provides support for research involving the health and safety of children involved in physical recreation including competitive or noncompetitive sports, martial arts, or dance. A maximum of $20,000 per year is available to support direct operating costs of the project. Applications must be identified as “Sports Legacy Fund” directed by adding the designation “SLF” after the title.
Small Grants
Small Grants are available to initiate new research projects that are clearly related to child health and range from $250 to a maximum of $5,000 in value. Applications are accepted at any time during the year, and are reviewed at regularly scheduled Institute Review Committee (IRC) meetings. A Small Grant Checklist must be completed and accompany each application.

Equipment Grants
These grants provide funds for specialized equipment that can be used by multiple investigators. Evidence of the use of equipment by more than a single MICH member strengthens funding priority. There are two competitions per year for equipment grants, usually in September and again early in following year.

Travel Grants
These grants are awarded to support MICH members, sub-specialty fellows in full-time post-residency research training, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and research associates presenting their first-authored child health related research findings at national and international scientific meetings. Support may be considered for undergraduate students who are presenting research conducted during the tenure of a Manitoba Institute of Child Health sponsored undergraduate award.
In each calendar year, the maximum award is $1,000 CDN. The Travel Grant Application must be received at least 30 days prior to the date of departure. Within 30 days of completion of travel, the Travel Reimbursement Form plus original receipts for all expenditures must be submitted to the MICH administration office. Both forms can be found below.
