MICH Membership

What is a Manitoba Institute of Child Health (MICH) Member?
A MICH member is an individual who holds a faculty appointment at a Manitoba university, is involved in child health research, has successfully applied or has been invited to become a MICH member, and enjoys the benefits of affiliation with the Manitoba Institute of Child Health.
What are the benefits of being a MICH Member?
MICH membership offers a number of key benefits to individuals with an interest and commitment to child health research, including:
- The opportunity to contribute to child health research efforts through building unique collaborations with other investigators, involvement in the training and mentoring of new child health researchers, assisting with public outreach and education, assisting with development of international symposia on a range of topics related to child health research, and participating in the peer review of research programs
- The ability to apply for Manitoba Institute of Child Health funding opportunities such as operating grants, studentships and/or awards for research trainees, specialized equipment grants, travel grants, and funds for Visiting Professors collaboratively with the Manitoba Institute of Child Health
- The opportunity to have allocated research space within the state-of-the-art facilities of the Manitoba Institute of Child Health in the John Buhler Research Centre, which provides a collaborative work environment in the specialized field of child health research
- The use of facilities at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, such as shared specialized equipment, patient examination rooms, meeting and conference rooms, audiovisual resources, and information technology systems
- The ability to access essential research support services offered at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, such as the Clinical Resource Unit (CRU) and their onsite research nurses, and biostatistical consulting services.
- The chance to enhance and confirm your dedication to child health by joining and sharing in the Manitoba Institute of Child Health’s mission to improving the health of children and youth in Manitoba and across the world
Am I Qualified and Eligible?
MICH Membership is open to individuals with faculty appointments at a Manitoba university who have an interest in child health research. Membership is not restricted to members of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba.
The major decisive factor for membership is involvement and commitment to child health research. Evidence of involvement or commitment may include:
- A major professional career focus in child health care delivery in medical or allied health disciplines.
- A major research focus in childhood disease or preservation of child health, as supported by research grants and contracts, production of technology to improve child health, direct monitoring of child health research trainees, and publication of new knowledge and insight into child health.
- Active collaboration in a child health research project.
Categories of Membership
Membership can occur under various categories, as described below. A number of factors including extent of time currently spent in child health research, prior research training and/or accomplishment, stature in the research community, and stage of research career will determine the category of membership.
- A Scientist is someone who works full time within the child health environment who conducts or directs research themselves or who makes significant contributions to child health research projects on an ongoing collaborative basis. A scientist may apply to have assigned space within the facilities of the Institute and is expected to play an active role in research, research training, administration and/or promotion.
- A Collaborating Scientist joins the Manitoba Institute of Child Health for the purpose of an individual project and shares the facilities with MICH scientists for the duration of that project, but has a major focus beyond the purview of the Manitoba Institute of Child Health. A collaborating scientist may be the co-supervisor of MICH sponsored research trainees, provided another co-supervisor is a MICH scientist.
- A Scientist-in-Training is a scientist who is in their first independent appointment after fellowship or post doctoral studies, has a major focus within their research area with the majority of their time spent on MICH related activities, but who is working under mentorship of senior MICH scientists.
- A Visiting Scientist is a scientist who is assigned temporary privileges similar to those in any of the above categories, but for a finite time followed by return to their home institution.
- A Senior Scientist is an individual who meets the criteria of the scientist category but has been awarded the senior designation as recognition of outstanding contributions to child health research, particularly in mentorship and career development of other scientists. Leaders of research themes are normally designated as Senior Scientists.
- An Honorary Scientist is an individual who is offered MICH membership by the Board of the Manitoba Institute of Child Health in recognition of exemplary service to child health research on a national or international scale. Such an award may be offered to a scientist or non-scientist who has shown exemplary commitment to the improvement of child health through support of research. Honorary scientists would have access to visit MICH facilities and participate in symposia and similar events, but would not normally play a role in research programs. The Board of Directors of the Manitoba Institute of Child Health will approve Honorary Scientist memberships.
How do I apply?
Applications for membership can be made at any time, through the office of the Director of Research. To apply, please submit a letter to the Director of Research that includes a one-page summary of your interest, current and proposed involvement in child health research. The application should indicate the category of appointment that you seek and must be accompanied by a current curriculum vitae.
